A major voice of the saxophone, Steve Coleman made his debut in New York with masters such as Cecil Taylor, David Murray, Doug Hammond, Dave Holland, Abbey Lincoln... Also playing in the streets with trumpeter Graham Haynes, he formed in 1981 Steve Coleman and Five Elements, a group that still serve as the main ensemble for his activities. This group developed a concept of improvisation within nested looping structures called the M-Base concept. In this podcast the musician questions himself: What determines and shapes sound? Is there a specific sound for each era? For each musician? Does it make sense to "sound like Coltrane"…
